A survival kit may refer to a package that can contain the supplies and basic materials to aid an individual to survival in the event of an emergency situation. This kit is mostly referred to as a load used by the armed forces to house the needed supplies such as food, shelter and other necessary items for survival.

A soldier or a group of soldiers in armed forces is equipped with a survival kit that could contain the shelter or materials for warmth such as Space blanket, mosquito net or tube tent. A survival kit may also contain first-aid medicines and personal needs; food and water storage container; insect repellent and money.

Moreover, multipurpose tools and materials such as Swiss army knife, sharpening stone, parachute cord, heavy-duty thread and needle and firearms and pistols could be included in a survival kit.

Navigational devices such as personal locator beacons, compass, signal mirrors and maps could also be stored in a survival kit and can be used as needed during survival operations. Survival manual could be a very essential material that can be brought with in a survival kit by a soldier. Books such as SAS Survival Guide and United States Army Survival Manual can be used as references for survival guidelines in harsh situations and in case of emergency.

The survival kit can be a backpack containing the necessary materials for survival or can be a load or transportation that has supplies and survival tools. The contents of a survival kit carried by a soldier may vary depending on a situation, area or climate. A soldier may also bring with him a mini survival kit that can accommodate small necessary survival tools such as mini compass, plastic garbage bag, fishing hook, small candle, waterproof matches, knife blade, jigsaw blade and other necessary survival supplies that can fit in a small kit.

Survivalist campers also carry a survival kit. It is called by survivalists as bug-out bag or get out of dodge kit or GOOD kit. It can contain supplies such as medical equipment, communications gear, power supplies, water purification equipment and food. They can be loaded in a vehicle if they are bulky.

Survivalists may carry items in a bug-out bag which he deemed necessary. However, other campers may bring various supplies and needed survival tools and equipment if they aim for a longer trip.

The contents of a survival kit can be anything as long as they are important for survival and are needed in times of emergency. Homeowners may also have their own versions of survival kits as preparations for calamities.
